Alcoholic fly larvae need fix for learning

Friday, November 30, 2012

Fly larvae fed on alcohol-spiked food for a period of days grow dependent on those spirits for learning. The findings, reported in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, on November 29th, show how overuse of alcohol can produce lasting changes in the brain, even after alcohol abuse stops.

The report also provides evidence that the very human experience of alcoholism can be explored in part with studies conducted in fruit flies and other animals, the researchers say.

"Our evidence supports the long-ago proposed idea that functional ethanol tolerance is produced by adaptations that counter the effects of ethanol, and that these adaptations help the nervous system function more normally when ethanol is present," says Brooks Robinson of The University of Texas at Austin. "However, when ethanol is withheld, the adaptations persist to give the nervous system abnormal properties that manifest themselves as symptoms of withdrawal."

Robinson and his colleagues found that alcohol consumption, at a level equivalent to mild intoxication in humans, at first impeded learning by fly larvae. More specifically, those larvae had some trouble in associating an unpleasant heat pulse with an otherwise attractive odor in comparison to larvae that had not been drinking alcohol.

After a six-day drinking binge, however, those larvae adapted and could learn as well as normal larvae could. In fact, the alcohol-adapted animals learned poorly when their ethanol was taken away from them. And, when given alcohol back, their learning deficit was erased.

Robinson says that the findings are the first proof of cognitive ethanol dependence in an invertebrate, suggesting that some of ethanol's ability to change behavior must begin at the cellular level. After all, flies and humans share many of the same features at the level of individual neurons, and not so much in terms of the way those neurons are put together into working circuits.

The study also shows that the "responses to ethanol that addict and plague us" have a very long evolutionary history, Robinson says. And that means that genetic analysis in flies might yield some very important answers.

Giving customers a chance to complain can be a bad idea if customers believe they're to blame for a product's failure, a new study from the Sauder School of Business at UBC shows.

"It's commonly assumed that giving customers a chance to voice grievances allows companies to maintain relationships," says Marketing Professor Darren Dahl, who co-authored the recent Journal of Marketing study with PhD student Lea Dunn.

"But our research shows that when a person feels implicated in a product's failure think building Ikea furniture they're more likely to shift blame to the product when complaining and increase ill will toward it."

In an experiment, subjects were divided into two groups and directed to replicate the preparation of an "award-winning smoothie." All of the participants were set-up to fail with poor quality food processors.

Half the group was made to feel the smoothie failure was their fault and the other half was told that it was likely a machine malfunction.

Participants primed to believe the failure was their fault rated the machine lower on a nine-point scale after complaining 3.29 versus the same participants who were not given the chance to complain 4.31.

Participants primed to blame the processor rated the device higher after given the chance to complain 4.02 versus 3 out of nine.

A further experiment showed that when self-blamers were provided with affirmative statements about their competence, they became more likely to rate a product favourably after complaining 5.22 versus 3.36 on a nine-point scale.

"With companies turning to social media to communicate with consumers, the power of customer complaints has been amplified," says Professor Dahl. "Our study shows that companies shouldn't just let people sound off. They need to be stroking egos, as well."

2012 Mayan Apocalypse Rumors Have Dark Side, NASA Warns

NASA scientists took time on Wednesday (Nov. 28) to soothe 2012 doomsday fears, warning against the dark side of Mayan apocalypse rumors ? frightened children and suicidal teens who truly fear the world may come to an end Dec. 21.

These fears are based on misinterpretations of the Mayan calendar. On the 21st, the date of the winter solstice, a calendar cycle called the 13th b'ak'tun comes to an end. Although Maya scholars agree that the ancient Maya would not have seen this day as apocalyptic, rumors have spread that a cosmic event may end life on Earth on that day.

Thus NASA's involvement. The space agency maintains a 2012 information page debunking popular Mayan apocalypse rumors, such as the idea that a rogue planet will hit Earth on Dec. 21, killing everyone. (In fact, astronomers are quite good at detecting near-Earth objects, and any wandering planet scheduled to collide with Earth in three weeks would be the brightest object in the sky behind the sun and moon by now.)

"There is no true issue here," David Morrison, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center, said during a NASA Google+ Hangout event today (Nov. 28). "This is just a manufactured fantasy." [End of the World? Top Doomsday Fears]

Real-world consequences

Unfortunately, Morrison said, the fantasy has real-life consequences. As one of NASA's prominent speakers on 2012 doomsday myths, Morrison said, he receives many emails and letters from worried citizens, particularly young people. Some say they can't eat, or are too worried to sleep, Morrison said. Others say they're suicidal.

"While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," he said.

Not every 2012 apocalypse believer thinks the world will end on Dec. 21. Some, inspired by New Age philosophies, expect a day of universal peace and spiritual transformation. But it's impressionable kids who have NASA officials worried.

"I think it's evil for people to propagate rumors on the Internet to frighten children," Morrison said.

Myths and misconceptions

NASA scientists took questions via social media in the hour-long video chat, debunking doomsday myths from the rogue planet Nibiru to the danger of killer solar flares.

In fact, said NASA heliophysicist Lika Guhathakurta, it's true that the sun is currently in an active phase of its cycle, meaning electromagnetic energy has picked up. Large solar flares can impact electronics and navigation systems on Earth, but satellites monitoring the sun give plenty of warning and allow officials to compensate for the extra electromagnetic activity when it hits our atmosphere. What's more, Guhathakurta said, this particular solar maximum is the "wimpiest" in some time ? scientists have no reason to expect solar storms beyond what our planet has weathered in the past.

Nor are any near-Earth objects, planetary or otherwise, threatening to slam into our planet on Dec. 21, said Don Yeomans, a planetary scientist who tracks near-Earth objects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The only close asteroid approach on the horizon is forecast to occur on Feb. 13, 2013, when an asteroid will pass within 4.5 Earth radii to our planet (for perspective, Earth's radius is 3,963 miles, or 6,378 kilometers). The asteroid is not going to hit Earth, Yeomans said.

Other rumors ? that the Earth's magnetic field will suddenly reverse or that the planet will travel almost 30,000 light-years and fall into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy ? were also dismissed. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, or about 6 trillion miles, or 10 trillion km.)

One popular rumor that the planet will undergo a complete blackout from Dec. 23 to 25 earned a "What?" and blank looks from the panel of scientists.

Ultimately, concerns about Earth's fate would be better focused on slow-acting problems such as climate change rather than some sort of cosmic catastrophe, said Andrew Fraknoi, an astronomer at Foothill College in California.

Mitzi Adams, a heliophysicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, agreed.

"The greatest threat to Earth in 2012, at the end of this year and in the future, is just from the human race itself," Adams said.

HARP Enhancements Continue to Bolster Program | RealEstateRama

More than One in Four HARP Refis for Deeply Underwater Borrowers

Washington, D.C. ? November 29, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) today released its September Refinance Report, which shows that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans refinanced through the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) accounted for nearly one-quarter of all refinances in the third quarter of 2012. More than 90,000 homeowners refinanced their mortgage in September through HARP with more than 709,000 loans refinanced since the beginning of this year. The continued high volume of HARP refinances is attributed to record-low mortgage rates and program enhancements announced last year.

Also in the report:

? Since the program?s inception in 2009, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have financed more than 1.7 million loans through HARP.
? In September, half of the loans refinanced through HARP had loan-to-value (LTV) ratios greater than 105 percent and one-fourth had LTVs greater than 125 percent.
? In September, 19 percent of HARP refinances for underwater borrowers were for shorter-term 15- and 20-year mortgages, which help build equity faster than traditional 30-year mortgages.
? HARP refinances in September represented 45 percent of total refinances in states hard hit by the housing downturn?Nevada, Arizona, Florida and Georgia?compared with 21 percent of total refinances nationwide.
? Also in September, HARP refinances for borrowers with LTV ratios greater than 105 percent accounted for more than 70 percent of HARP volume in Nevada, Arizona and Florida and more than 60 percent of the HARP refinances in California.

Visualized Qualcomm's patent wall

Just like how a rock star would hang all of his or her vinyl records on the wall, Qualcomm has a dedicated "Patent Wall" at its San Diego headquarters to show off 1,395 of its patent files. But that's just a fraction of the 13,000-something patents owned by the company, of course. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos of Paul Jacobs' pool of gold coins behind that wall.

Obama shields U.S. airlines from EU carbon fees

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama signed a bill on Tuesday shielding U.S. airlines from paying for each ton of carbon their planes emit flying into and out of Europe, despite a recent move by Europe to suspend its proposed measure for one year.

The carbon fee bill was the first piece of legislation debated on the House floor after Congress returned from recess on November 13, and had been cleared by the Senate in September in a rare unanimous vote.

It directs the U.S. transportation secretary to shield U.S. airlines from Europe's carbon emissions trading scheme (ETS) if he or she deems it necessary.

Lawyers have said the bill is unusual because it would prevent U.S. companies from complying with the laws of another country.

"The Obama administration is firmly committed to reducing harmful carbon pollution from civil aviation both domestically and internationally, but, as we have said on many occasions, the application of the EU ETS to non-EU air carriers is the wrong way to achieve that objective," Clark Stevens, a White House spokesman, said.

He added that the administration is focused on making progress toward a global solution to reduce emissions under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the U.N. body that deals with aviation issues.

The U.S. airline industry's main lobbying group, Airlines for America, praised Obama and said it, too, favored working through the ICAO to solve the problem. The group estimated that complying with the EU law would have cost U.S. airlines $3.1 billion between now and 2020.

"It never made a bit of sense for European governments to tax our citizens for flying over our own airspace ? and with the passage of this law we've got the tools we need to prevent it from happening and protect American jobs," said Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, a co-author of the bill.

The House passed the bill despite a November 12 announcement that the European Union would "stop the clock" on enforcing its law for one year.

The European Commission said it would delay the application of its law to give ICAO enough time to craft a global framework to address emissions before the next assembly of all 190 members next autumn.

McCaskill and co-sponsor Republican Senator John Thune said in a statement that their bill had pressured the EU into delaying the enforcement of their cap-and-trade scheme for aviation.

The EU had also been under pressure from China, one of the world's fastest growing markets for aircraft, which had threatened to cancel orders of European Airbus aircraft if the EU did not back down from applying its ETS on all airlines.

One EU official took to the social networking site Twitter to suggest that United States was not making good on suggestions for "greener" policies.

Obama made reference to climate change as one of a trio of issues facing the country in his victory speech after being re-elected on November 6.

"So far the reelected President Obama climate policies look EXACTLY as in first term. Wonder when we'll see the announced change?" Connie Hedegaard, EU Climate Change Commissioner, said in a tweet.

Green groups criticized Obama for signing the anti-ETS law as one of his first post-election acts but said the administration has the opportunity to back a global solution under ICAO.

"The White House now must endorse a global, market-based measure to rein in carbon pollution from aviation," said World Wildlife Fund's Keya Chatterjee.

Egypt opposition snubs Mursi plan to ease decree crisis

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi will press ahead with a protest on Tuesday to demand the scrapping of a decree extending his powers, rejecting the Islamist's attempt to defuse a crisis that has brought violence back to Cairo's streets.

Mursi was accused of giving himself the powers of a modern-day pharaoh when he issued the decree last week that prevents legal challenges to any decision he takes until a new parliament is elected.

The president tried to ease tensions on Monday by agreeing to a compromise proposed by senior judges on the Supreme Judicial Council limiting the scope of presidential decisions that are immune from a court challenge.

But protesters camped out in Tahrir Square, the heart of the uprising that unseated Hosni Mubarak almost two years ago, said they would not leave until the decree was scrapped entirely.

"We came out in order to cancel the constitutional declaration completely," said Mohamed Fadel, 34, who was speaking among the tents that have been erected in the centre of Tahrir Square.

Violence has flared in the past when supporters and opponents of Mursi held rival protests. However, the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that propelled Mursi to office in this year's presidential poll, cancelled their own demonstration in Cairo also planned for Tuesday.

The crisis, the biggest since Mursi took office in June, has exposed deep divisions in the nation between Islamists and their opponents. It threatens to undermine Egypt's fragile economic recovery, signaled by an initial deal reached last week for a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Mona Amer, spokesman for the opposition movement Popular Current, said Tuesday's protest would go on. "We asked for the cancellation of the decree and that did not happen," she said.

Mursi's opponents have accused him of behaving like a dictator and the West has voiced its concern, worried by more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel and lies at the heart of the Arab Spring.

One person has been killed and about 370 injured in violence since Mursi issued decree on Thursday, emboldened by international praise for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

UNREFORMED JUDICIARY

The decree was seen as targeting in part a legal establishment still largely unreformed from Mubarak's era. However, the Supreme Judicial Council, the nation's highest judicial body, proposed Mursi limit the scope of decisions that would be immune from judicial review to "sovereign matters", language the presidential spokesman said Mursi backed.

"The president said he had the utmost respect for the judicial authority and its members," spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters in announcing the agreement.

After reading out the statement outlining what was agreed with judges, Ali told Reuters: "The statement I read is an indication that the issue is resolved."

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

Before the president's announcement, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahy said protests would continue until the decree was scrapped and said Tahrir would be a model of an "Egypt that will not accept a new dictator because it brought down the old one".

As well as shielding his decisions from judicial review, Mursi's decree protected an Islamist-dominated assembly drawing up a new constitution from legal challenge. Liberals and others say their voices are being ignored in that assembly, and many have walked out.

Only once a constitution is written can a new parliamentary election be held. Until then, legislative and executive power remains in Mursi's hands.

Though both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, his rivals oppose Mursi's methods.

Simon & Schuster helps launch self-publisher

NEW YORK (AP) ? A leading mainstream publisher and a top self-publishing company are teaming up.

Simon & Schuster and Author Solutions Inc. on Tuesday announced the creation of Archway Publishing, which will focus on self-published fiction, nonfiction, business and children's books. Digital technology has helped lead to the proliferation of self-published books, with Sylvia Day and Amanda Hocking among those becoming best-selling authors.

"Self-publishing has become a viable and popular route to publication for many authors, and increasingly a source of content for traditional publishers, including Simon & Schuster," Carolyn Reidy, Simon & Schuster's president and CEO, said in a statement.

"We're excited that we'll be able to help more authors find their own path to publication and at the same time create a more direct connection to those self-published authors ready to make the leap to traditional publishing."

Archway will offer a range of services, from a basic $1,599 package that includes "editorial assessment" and "cover copy review" to a $24,999 "Outreach" program for business books that features an "author profile video" and a reception at BookExpo America, the industry's annual national convention.

Archway places Simon & Schuster in an indirect business relationship with rival publisher Penguin Group (USA), which owns Author Solutions. The CEO of Author Solutions, Kevin Weiss, said that no Penguin officials will be involved in running Archway.

Police probe how Romney security data became New York City parade confetti

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Police are investigating how shredded documents revealing confidential information, including details about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's motorcade, wound up as confetti on a Manhattan sidewalk during the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Bits of shredded paper from the Nassau County Police Department could still be found on Monday afternoon in the cracks of the sidewalks along Central Park, according to Saul Finkelstein, the eyewitness who first alerted authorities to the problem.

Thousands of pieces of shredded paper were scattered along the parade route at 65th Street and Central Park West shortly after the parade began on Thursday morning, Finkelstein and his son, Ethan Finkelstein, 18, told Reuters.

Upon closer inspection, the confetti contained information from Nassau County police incident reports plus the names, social security numbers and bank account information of Nassau County police officers and employees.

Other scraps included information about Mitt Romney's motorcade to and from the October 16 presidential debate at Hofstra University in Nassau County, which borders New York City to the east on Long Island.

"It was everywhere," Saul Finkelstein said, estimating the scraps piled three inches off the ground. The Finkelsteins scooped up and took home several handfuls, a small percentage of what was on the ground, Ethan Finkelstein said.

The Nassau County Police Department on Monday reiterated its statement from Saturday that it was very concerned and would investigate how the documents got to Manhattan and review how it disposes of sensitive documents.

Authorities could not say how shredded paper from a Long Island police force ended up along the parade route. The confetti Macy's uses in the parade is multicolored and commercially manufactured confetti, not shredded bits of printer paper, a Macy's spokesman said in an email.

Parade spectators often bring homemade confetti to the parade. Both spectators in the crowd and participants in the parade were throwing the shredded Nassau County documents at each other, Saul Finkelstein said.

Two internal affairs officers from the Nassau County Police Department visited Finkelstein's home on Sunday to recover the shredded documents and take a statement, Saul Finkelstein said.

Revealing shreds of Nassau County police documents were still on the ground on Monday, Saul Finkelstein said.

YASIV Lays Out Amazon Recommendations in a Visual Web for Easier BrowsingYASIV Lays Out Amazon Recommendations in a Visual Web for Easier Browsing Amazon has great prices and a great selection, but sometimes its browsing leaves a bit to be desired. YASIV is a simple tool that lets you type in a book or album you like, and view what other fans have bought in a visual, web-like view.

On almost every product, Amazon lists related items under "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought." Unfortunately, scrolling through that list and opening each item up is annoying. YASIV gives you a tree spreading out from one item, showing you not just what other customers bought with that item, but what other customers bought from those resulting items as well, giving you a massive web of books, albums, or anything else you might be interested in. Protecting your Children's Inheritance | Fifty Plus Advocates

By Linda T. Cammuso

When parents name a child in a will or trust, or list the child as a joint owner on an asset (e.g. a bank account) or as a beneficiary of life insurance or an IRA/401K, the asset becomes the child?s property upon the parent?s death.

Today more than ever, parents are concerned about how children and grandchildren will handle their inheritances. Statistically, inherited money is spent at a significantly faster rate than a person?s earned or saved money. Whether because the children are young, in debt, struggling with an addiction, or simply not good with money, many parents fear that their life savings will quickly vanish in the children?s hands.

In addition to voluntary spending, children also stand to lose inherited assets involuntarily:

?With a skyrocketing divorce rate, many inheritances will be lost to children?s spouses in future divorce proceedings.

?Inheritances can be quickly lost to bankruptcies, foreclosures and other creditor problems.

?Children in high-risk professions may become the target of a lawsuit and lose their inheritance to a judgment creditor.

?Children who are disabled may lose certain benefits (such as SSI or Medicaid) if the inheritance raises their assets beyond program limits.

?A child with college-age children can suffer adverse college financial aid consequences from the receipt of an inheritance.

The good news is that some simple modifications to your estate plan can protect your children?s (or other beneficiaries?) inheritance from virtually all financial threats. With a straightforward trust arrangement, your children can benefit from their inheritance yet not have it considered their asset for creditors, divorces, public benefits or even their own unwise spending.

Your estate plan presents a unique opportunity to provide a level of asset protection for your children (or other beneficiaries) that they would not be able to achieve for themselves once the inheritance comes into their name. This is because the laws of most states (including Massachusetts) do not allow a person to establish a trust with their own assets and benefit from it while at the same time shielding it from their creditors. Yet, a person can establish a trust with their assets, for the benefit of someone else, and with the right language protect the trust assets from the third party-beneficiary?s creditors.

Bottom line: if you leave all or a portion of your children?s inheritance in trust for their benefit, you can protect it both from them and their outside financial exposures.

TeachMoore: Confusion Abounds on Teacher Evaluations

As I was going through my blog reader this morning, I came across a fascinating juxtaposition.?

First, part of the ongoing series in Hechinger Report on the new evaluation system that has become law in neighboring Louisiana. The article notes:?

In English, math, science, and social studies, teachers will be measured on their students? progress on existing state tests. But Louisiana school districts have broad latitude when selecting the exams that will be used in subjects without standard state tests. In some cases, district officials are letting teachers choose or design the assessments on which they will be judged. In other cases, school boards, superintendents, or principals are picking the exams without consulting or even notifying teachers.[emphasis mine]

State Superintendent John White said state officials recommended a few possible exams in subjects like foreign languages. They also offered guidance on acceptable learning targets for students, and advice as to how administrators can use those targets to decide whether an individual teacher is ?effective.? But they felt that it would be ?a mistake to impose a test.?

?Our philosophy is that local leadership should be empowered,? he said.

That last phrase is only comforting if you have competent and responsible local leadership. I'm thinking of the school district in which three of my grandchildren attend school, where the entire school board is appointed and not one member has or has ever had a child attend the public schools.?

Just above that was this post from one of the Teacher Ambassadors at the U.S. Department of Education explaining the Department's official position on use of standardized testing in teacher evaluations. Marciano Guttierrez, teacher from Mountain View, California notes that:?

At a?speech?to the National Council for Social Studies, Mr. Duncan stated, ?Just to be 100 percent clear?evaluation should never be based only on test scores. That would be ridiculous. It should also include factors like principal observation or peer review, student work, parent feedback. It should be designed locally?and teachers should be at the table to help design it.? The Department?s work on educator evaluations has thus been to promote multiple measures to elicit a well-rounded perspective on one?s craft and to encourage districts and schools to primarily use these tools as a means for quality professional development. This thinking was also captured in a?speech?that the Secretary made to Baltimore County teachers this past fall....

...As a previous Teacher Fellow with the Hope Street Group, and in my current work with Race to the Top states, I have seen a variety of state-developed approaches and strategies that aim to meet this vision. I have come to realize that the strongest evaluation systems have been developed with robust teacher input at every stage of the process.? These evaluation systems, which are designed and improved with the practical insight of teachers, use test scores as only one of multiple measures of effectiveness, therefore allowing teachers of students like mine, to demonstrate quality teaching in ways that transcend test scores alone.

So why all the confusion? Why are so many places trying to develop teacher evaluations as if there are no guidelines, no models, and no professional educators to help design them? How is the teacher evaluation process developing where you are?

Using computational biology for the annotation of proteins - I Hate ...

Proteins are molecules that are formed by chains of amino acids and they play a fundamental role in all of life, given that they contain the coded information in genes; they, therefore, carry out numerous functions in an organism: immunological (antibodies), structural (they constitute the majority of cellular material), bioregulating (they form part of enzymes) and a long list of etceteras. In short, they regulate thousands of process that take place within all organisms, including inside the human organism, and they frequently do so by means of relationships they establish with other cells. ?Analyzing and using this network of interactions is a very interesting task due to the large number of associations that exist and to the multiple forms in which one protein can influence the function of others,? explains Professor Beatriz Garc?a, of UC3M?s Computer Science department. ?In such a complex biological scenario, determining the functional associations through experiments is very costly, so we have tried to apply computational tools to predict these functions and so orient experimentation,? she points out. Thus, the idea is to use techniques from the field of Artificial Intelligence, specifically from the area of Machine Learning, to obtain useful results for Biology, as part of an emerging interdisciplinary field known as Biocomputing or Computational Biology.

In this context, this line of research goes further in the annotation of the function of proteins, that is, in the determination of which protein or which group of proteins performs which task within an organism. In short, these scientists have dealt with two specific problems: the prediction of functional associations between pairs of proteins in the bacteria Escherichia coli and the extension of biological pathways in humans. In addition, they offer conclusions regarding the interpretation of those predictions, which may help explain the function of the cellular processes that were studied. ?In particular,? states Beatriz Garc?a, ?the predictions obtained regarding two human proteins stand out (E3 SUMO-protein ligase y E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase DTX1); these were previously related to the controlled degradation of certain proteins, and we can now propose a new function related to the stabilization of telomeres and, therefore, their possible implication in cellular aging and the development of cancer, which will require experimental verification.?

For this study, part of which was recently published in the journal PLOS ONE, the researcher has received the award for the best doctoral dissertation in her field (Experimental Sciences and Technology) from the Real Academia de Doctores de Espa?a (Spanish Royal Academy of Doctors). The implications that this work holds for the scientific community are already being felt. In fact, the results of the first problem that the project analyzes have already been integrated into the predictions server EcID (E.coli Interaction Database) and they offer a reliability value for the predictions that improves the system?s performance when finding functional associations among the proteins that appear in this database. Moreover, the second biological problem dealt with in the study opens a new area of research in Biocomputing, by extending already existing pathways. ?The procedure it presents complements the only previously existing publication in the field, extending the pathways with many more proteins and exploring a greater surface of the network of interactions,? comments the researcher. In addition, it could be applied to many more problems of functional annotation in Biology and other fields in which there is relevant information with multiple relationships.

In any case, much work remains to be done in the area of Biocomputation. ?There are still so many unresolved biological problems that need computational solutions,? assures Beatriz Garc?a, who highlights the relevance of this field, which is growing with the advances in new technologies; yet many computational challenges remain, such as the analysis of the new generation of sequencing. ?This is an area that needs more trained professionals who can integrate Biology and Computer Science, in order to improve our knowledge of our organism at the molecular level and, finally, to facilitate the treatment of diseases,? she concludes.

The Key to Celebrating Holidays with Multiple Family Loyalties ...

Step, Blended & Reconfigured: Making Holidays Bright for Kids with Multiple Family Loyalties

?You hear a lot of dialogue on the death of the American family. Families aren?t dying. They?re merging into big conglomerates.?
~ Erma Bombeck

They are called stepfamilies, blended families, reconstituted or reconfigured. The modern family often includes multiple people from multiple relationships. More than any other time of year, holidays highlight the departure from what has been seen as the ?traditional? family.

As with most things, this can be an affirmation of successful reconfiguration of one?s family or a reminder of all the things that were, and perhaps still are, wrong. For most, it?s a complicated mix of regrets, relief, anger, sorrow and joy.

For most, it?s how the adults manage the situation that determines the health and safety of the heart part of the new configuration of the family.

However committed, enthusiastic, and in love new partners may be, the children who share heredity with only one member of the couple have a different experience and therefore different feelings about the season than the adults. It?s important to remember that in the vast majority of cases, the children of divorce didn?t want it. They often worry that they?re at fault. They have competing loyalties to both parents. They often wish there were a way to get their original family back to whatever they experienced as ?normal.?

However wonderful mom?s or dad?s new partner may be, they are prepared not to like him or her. They often grieve their former family quietly ? or not so quietly ? for years. As a result, they are often even more ambivalent and conflicted about holiday traditions than the adults. While the adults are enthusiastically trying to make the holidays bright and joyful, the children may find it a painful time of revisited loss of the actual family that was or the myth of how the family might have been if only?

The key to transitioning to a different sense of ?family-ness? is flexibility on the part of adults. Adults, being the adults, need to respect their children?s reluctance and understand where it?s coming from. By tuning in and being flexible about how holidays are celebrated, the adults can help create new traditions that nurture the heart of the new ?conglomerate? called their family in all its complexity.

Be Flexible about Dates

For some, it?s a radical idea: Dates aren?t important. Feelings are. When children are caught in the debate of who ?gets? Christmas morning or Hanukkah first night, the time with whoever ?wins? is shadowed by the knowledge that they have left the ?loser? alone. When both parents insist on having the kids be part of Christmas Day or when kids are expected to eat a huge meal at two Thanksgiving dinners, the kids often end up overwhelmed and emotionally and physically exhausted.

Lighten up. Holidays are only 24 hours long. But the season lasts a couple of months. Everyone can have a holi-DAY. Alternate years for the actual holiday if you must, but don?t make the day with the other parent seem like a second-rate event. It?s not. It?s that parent?s special day with the children.

Be Flexible about Traditions

The adults may want to start new traditions for the new family. But kids are stubborn little creatures who thrive on predictability and sameness. Consider which traditions can be transferred to the stepfamily scene. If there are kids from both former marriages, help the children from each side introduce one or two special traditions to the mix. Then add a new tradition or two that isn?t tied to a particular family or a particular day.

A visit to Santa or a ride to view neighborhood lights can happen any time between Thanksgiving and New Year?s. Making candles for the menorah can happen any time before Hanukkah. Making and sending greeting cards can be a family event that happens well before the holiday week. Creating new traditions like these doesn?t compete with the children?s enjoyment of their other parent?s celebration and are part of defining the new family?s sense of ?us.?

Be Flexible about Who is Defined as Family

Those who divorce well separate without hatred or rancor. They agree that they couldn?t keep the marriage going but feel no need to revisit the conflicts and pain that caused them to part. They keep their children out of the middle and appreciate what the other parent has to offer. Yes, it does happen.

For such families, it?s not a stretch to create some moments in the holiday season where everyone can be in the same place at the same time. Mom, her new partner, his kids, her kids, her kids? father and new partner and her kids, can get together to do something low-stress like attending an event together or volunteering to help at a charity. Such activities bring the people together but don?t require one group to host the other.

When the adults can manage this, the children are reassured that they won?t lose anyone from their sense of family. They are given ?permission? to add people to their list of people who love them. They can love and be loyal to each parent without fearing the loss of the other.

Be Flexible ? Even if You Don?t Want to Be

Unless your former partner has abused the children, they can and should have a healthy, loving relationship with each other. No matter how hurt and angry you may be with your former spouse, no matter how much you hate him or her for what was done that made staying married impossible, no matter if child support isn?t coming as regularly as it should or if your former partner is irresponsible about finances, no matter how threatened your current partner is by the kids? relationship to their other parent ? those are the adults? problems, not your children?s.

Separate flexibility around honoring the holidays from unfinished emotional, psychological, or financial matters that were part of your divorce. If you refrain from making negative comments about their other parent and support the children in having a positive relationship with him or her, they will eventually figure out on their own just why the divorce was necessary. They will love you for not making them into unwilling allies in your fight and for giving them support in staying solidly connected to their other parent too.

The holidays only underline the issues that go on all year. Children of their parents? divorce, separations, and re-partnering are going along for a ride that most would not choose. It?s up to the grownups to be grown up. Making the holidays bright for children means doing whatever it takes to keep the focus on their needs. Not surprisingly, doing that also warms the family heart.

Republicans starting to rebel against tax pledge

With the fiscal cliff looming for the United States, some Republican members of Congress said Sunday they are ready to break a long standing pledge not to raise taxes.

"The only pledge we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece. And Republicans should put revenue on the table," South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said on ABC's "This Week."

Read more of the discussion of the fiscal on "This Week" today.

Graham's comments followed those by another Republican senator, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, who said last week he'll no longer abide by the pledge.

"I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge," he said in a local interview.

He got support today from House member Peter King, another Republican from New York.

"I agree entirely with Saxby Chambliss -- a pledge he signed 20 years ago, 18 years ago is for that Congress," King said on NBC's "Meet the Press." He added, "The world is changed and the economic situation is different."

Read Matthew Dowd's analysis of the efforts to avoid the fiscal cliff.

This growing chorus is about the pledge that Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist has gotten hundreds of Republicans to sign. But in an interview with ABC News, Norquist says it's just a few deserters.

"The people who have made a commitment to their constituents are largely keeping it," he said. "The fact is there is more support for both protecting the rates, you saw the Republican leader in the house say rates are non-negotiable, and he also talked about revenue coming from growth."

But President Obama has said rates will go up for the wealthy. There could be some political cover for Republicans if the country actually goes over the cliff. All the Bush era tax cuts would expire, including those for the wealthy. Congress could then vote to actually reduce taxes for everyone expect the rich. Therefore, they wouldn't technically raise taxes and violate Norquist's pledge.

But Nordquist said he doesn't think the public would buy those political moves, and he also doesn't think the country will actually go over the cliff.

"I think we'll continue the tax cuts. Not raise taxes $500 billion. Obama made the correct decision (by extending the Bush tax cuts) two years ago," Norquist told us.

Leading Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin also said he believes a deal is possible now that the Thanksgiving holiday break is over.

"We can solve this problem," he said on "This Week," adding: "There's no excuse. We're back in town."

Healthy Lifestyle ? A Comprehensive Approach ? Healthy Living ...

?What is this life full of care?

We have no time to stand and stare.?

- William Henry Davies

Reflecting the hectic and complicated nature of present day lifestyles, this quote is a grim reminder of the precedence acquired by material considerations over health and happiness. In our eagerness to earn more, we have neglected the balance between various aspects of life. Research has proved the link between contemporary lifestyles and disorders like obesity, heart and lung diseases, depression, anxiety, mood disorders etc.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as the state of complete physical, psychological, and social well being, not merely the absence of disease. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle is one that leads to such a complete state of well being. Broadly speaking, a healthy lifestyle can be attained by adherence to the following:

Positive Thinking: The mind has great power over the body. The hardest part is making up your mind. If you are determined to adopt a healthy lifestyle ? there is always a way. Develop a positive self image and be yourself. You can do well by not being unduly influenced by what other people say and by being ambitious only to a reasonable degree.
Balanced Diet: A balanced diet contains adequate amounts of nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and fats along with fiber and water. These are essential for efficient operation of the body. Fruits, vegetables, cereals, milk, and meat, should be sufficiently consumed in a balanced manner. Consuming whole grains and salads is particularly beneficial. If you are fond of intoxicating brews, opt for red wine that is an appetizer and aids digestion. Liquor is beneficial only in moderate quantities.

For best results, distribute the food intake throughout the day and progressively decrease it as the day progresses. Include proteins in your diet at the start of the day ? these suppress the feeling of hunger and, thereby, limit the desire for eating junk items between meals.

Herbal nutritional supplements are a natural way of compensating diet imbalances. They also improve immunity, memory, and sleep quality.

Exercise: A thirty minute daily workout keeps the body fit. Priority should be given to cardiovascular / cardio exercises like brisk walking, jogging, aerobics, skipping / jumping rope, swimming, bicycling etc. which increase the heart rate and maintain it for a sustained duration. These exercises improve the heart rate, metabolism, immunity, and hormonal profile. Cardio exercises are different from Pilates that focus on strength building and stretching. Cardio exercises are more effective for burning calories and weight maintenance. Yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises are beneficial for similar reasons.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a reasonable measure of a person?s fitness. It is the mass of the person in kilograms divided by the square of the person?s height measured in meters. A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is considered normal for an average adult.

Rest and Sleep: Rest and sleep repair the body, reduce stress and mood disorders, improve memory, and keep the heart healthy. Children need around ten hours of sleep, while adults can do with eight hours.

Social Interactions: This is related to the spiritual ? psychological wellness. Interacting with friends and relations transports us away from routine pressures thereby reducing stress. These meetings also produce a sense of belonging improving self esteem. Weekend picnics, holidays, vacations, and playing with pets have the same de-stressing effect.

Healthy and Hygienic Habits: Maintaining a clean, dust free ambience at home and at workspace promotes health. Keeping things organized, so that they are easy to find, brings down stress levels. Personal hygiene reduces the possibility of skin disease and, possibly, allergies. Smoking can be a fatal habit and needs to be given away or, at least, kept in check.

An integrated approach for the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle can work wonders for your overall well being. This will not only keep you physically fit but make you happier with a positive attitude.
