The Emotional Freedom Technique ? What Can I Use It For ...

The disadvantage could be the cost, which tends to range between $150 (#(?? 100) to $220 (#(?? 140) for one-day workshops. However the user gets far more than simply learning EFT. Most workshops have plenty of practice where you get to work deeply on your challenges or blocks, so attending a workshop may be also the healing equivalent of a few therapy sessions with an EFT practitioner!

EFT will be based upon the ancient Chinese exercise that energy flows throughout the human body and there are specific pressure points relating to the body that are able to correspond to different body organs. This practice was all about inserting needles on several points for treating medical conditions and illness. The process of emotional freedom technique is about this Chinese practice but without the needles.

Produced by Gary Craig, EFT is about making use of fingers to tap with specific acupuncture points to take out emotional blocks and help people who are traumatized or carrying an emotional baggage in the past. All through an EFT session, an expert combines the dual capabilities of affirmations (good statements) and tapping with fingers to recognize the root cause with emotional hurdles and then helps an individual get out of the fear or negative emotion attached for it.

Once the problematic area has recently been clearly defined, positive words let the human mind get rid of the negative impact and attached emotion along with it. This helps the individual accept the problem, work upon it, and find an ever-lasting solution into it, which comes by means of positive statements and accepting self. In other words, EFT is all about accessing the electromagnetic field of the body by tapping points in the body that are corresponding with the acupuncture meridian system. This alternative type of healing is used worldwide for releasing emotional, real bodily, and psychological pain caused by emotional trauma.

Today, EFT is utilized for treating medical complications such as fears, phobias, unhappiness, stress, fury, self-esteem factors, sleep loss, soreness management, fear of flying or height, relationship problems, asthma, together with attention deficit syndrome. It is also used to treat diabetes, claustrophobia, pain, trauma, neglect, allergen hypersensitivity, habits, stuttering (stammering), and blood pressure irregularities.

One of the best things about EFT is it?s a safe, non-invasive, and gentle technique which they can display by almost every an individual, in spite of age, gender, and emotional problem. It can also be used along with any other medical treatment (only after the advice of a skilled medical practitioner and an EFT expert) and also other self-improvement method.

In short, EFT (over emotional freedom technique) is a good way of getting rid of physical pain, unconscious blockage, and emotional unrest to lead a normal, happy, together with balanced life.
.
Today I was sought after, ? What can I use the Emotional Freedom Technique for? ? You Know precisely what? Why not try it for every situation you have to deal with!

That Emotional Freedom Technique

So what on earth can we use the idea for? More to the point, show me something that we cannot use it with regard to! Seriously I think most people are just struggling with the simplicity about this technique, they think it looks silly and

DICE+ digital chance cubes rolling out at E3

Image
As far as random number generators go, the traditional die is about as low tech as it gets. Or at least, it was. Gaming startup GIC has taken it upon itself to update the old chance cube by outfitting it with LED backlights, anti-cheat roll detection and Bluetooth connectivity. DICE+, as the shakers of tomorrow are called, will sell for between $30 and $40 when they launch later this year. Although the digital dice promise compatibility with iOS, Android, Symbian, Linux and Windows, GIC has yet to announce what platforms will be available at launch. We'll have to wait for E3 for the details, but the possibilities are intriguing -- hit the break to see the cubes in action. In the meantime, we'll be dreaming of Dungeons, Dragons, a digital D20 and Microsoft Surface.

Ali Shaw & The Abingdon Writers Group ? Gaskella

Last night I went to a meeting of the Abingdon Writers Group to which they?d invited author Ali Shaw to speak, and opened it up to non-members as part of the 2012 Abingdon Arts Festival. First we heard from several members of the group who talked about their experiences, the benefits of having a support group of other writers to critique their work and egg them on; we heard about some of their successes too which have been notable for a young group. ?If you?d like to find out more do click through to the link above.

In the second half of the evening Ali Shaw gave a reading from his fab new novel The Man Who Rained (my review here). He chose a lovely passage where Finn (the man who rains) shows Elsa canaries made from sunbeams ? magical!

Ali talked a bit about his two novels and their inspirations. A vision of glass feet came to him on an escalator in Reading as the initial thought behind his first book The Girl with Glass Feet (my review here). ?That book was steeped in the fairy-tale traditions of Hans Christian Andersen.

The Man Who Rained draws its themes from folklore rather than fairytale which is full of ?capricious weather characters? and the devil in all his guises.?Ali told us how he had wanted to think about a time where the weather was more elemental in people?s life, and to bring that feeling into a contemporary setting.

He mentioned how he sees his books which, for anyone who hasn?t read him have a strong natural magic element, as general fiction ? glad that there is an increasing blurring of genres these days, so that more books that would have been pigeonholed as fantasy gaining a general readership. ?He mentioned The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey as an example, (my review here). ?However, he added rather mischieviously, everything goes back to folklore and fairytale.

His third novel has just been delivered to his agent. It?s about a forest which grows overnight, and a man who has to find his wife in a world transformed by the primal power of nature. ?Powerful images indeed ? sounds fantastic!

He also talked about how he writes, how the best ideas come from the back of his brain, and how he doesn?t plan out his novels before he starts. ?He encouraged the writers group, comparing its function to that of his Creative Writing MA, and urged them to keep writing and use the group.

Then he signed books, and I was delighted that he remembered me from his previous visit to Abingdon and my blog posts on his books. ?Nice guy, great writer and lovely books too.

Commercial Real Estate Advice For Successful Sales And Buying

When you are considering a broker, ask them what their visions of success and failure entail. Ask how they have measured their results in the past, and have them give you examples. This will help you assess their working strategies. Make sure you agree with the values, principles, and strategies of the real estate broker you choose.

You might have to make improvements to your space before you can use it. It may be cosmetic changes like rearranging the furniture or painting the wall. The renovation project can get larger and could consist of knocking down, moving or building walls to make the floor plan usable. Decide in advice who will be responsible for these things and try to get landlords or previous owners to pay for some of it.

Keep watch for sellers who are looking to get rid of their properties quickly. You want to make sure you find the ones that are highly motivated, especially any who are very eager to make money by selling below market value. This is real estate and until you are able to land that seller, you will never land that deal, and that means never landing that profit.

Before you choose your real estate broker, find out how they negotiate. Know what sort of education and background they have. Look for a broker who cares both about ethics and helping you succeed. Ideally, he or she should be capable of helping you get good deals without resorting to immoral or illegal activity. Request evidence of previous negotiations, both successes and failures.

If you are touring several properties, be sure to utilize a checklist to make things easier for you. Don?t go any further than 1st round proposal responses, unless you let the owners of the property know. Do not be scared to let the owners know about other properties you have in mind. You might score a more reasonable deal that way.

Before you begin your commercial real estate search, develop a clear understanding of the needs of your business. Know what type of office space that you need to have. If you?re growing a company, buy more space than you currently need to save money before the market prices rise again.

One of the biggest differences between a residential loan and a commercial one is the size of the down payment you?re required to make. You need to research different lenders so that you can find the best one for you. In addition, seek out information regarding what investment types are the hottest right now.

When searching for a commercial real estate broker, ask about their primary source of income. They should be able to discuss the question openly and tell you that their best interest differs from yours. Understand that there is still a profitable business to be ran behind the curtains, but a good firm will find an agreeable median between their financial needs and your real estate demands.

Location is crucial when it comes to commercial property. Pay attention to the property?s surrounding area. The neighborhood?s demographics, including socioeconomic status and age of residents, influence the success of your investment. You also want to look for a neighborhood that is solid and growing. Make sure that the area will still be nice and growing in several years.

You need to know the details of emergency maintenance procedures. Get a list of emergency maintenance contacts from your landlord. Always keep this important contact information at hand, including average turnaround times. Make an emergency plan once you have this information. If a flood, fire or break-in interrupts your normal business day, you need to have a plan in place so that you can re-open as soon as possible.

Send out a monthly enewsletter, or update your investors by using Facebook or Twitter. After completion of a transaction, you should work to cultivate an online presence.

Be aware that not all commercial brokers are alike. Choose the real estate broker who will best help you meet your needs. So-called ?full service? brokers represent both tenants and landlords, while there are other brokers that work exclusively with tenants. You may be helped much more with a broker who just works with the tenant, as that person most likely has more experience in handling tenants successfully.

Only work with companies that are sincerely interested in the success of their customers. If you work with a company that only cares about its own profits, you might lose money on preventable mistakes.

There are many benefits to building a personal relationship with your area real estate brokers, lenders and other investors. Remember that many properties sell before they can even be listed; therefore, a more complete network improves your chances of locating the best opportunities.

If you are looking to invest in an apartment complex, be mindful of the fact that smaller communities can pose more complexity than dealing with a larger one. Due to this, a lot of field experts advise avoiding any property with a single digit number of units. Keep in mind that all situations are distinct; however, doing your homework about a particular possibility should be the final straw in your choosing.

Now, you are much more prepared when it comes to commercial real estate. You knew some things before, but now you are unstoppable! The tips you have read in this article will help you become a successful investor in commercial real estate.

Video Making for Fun and For (Non)Profits

Sean King

Sean King

Video?may not be the most widely used marketing channel, but it is definitely one of the?fastest?growing. Video, when done right, can grab your audience?s attention and make a lasting impression. Sean King, who is also participating in our Nonprofit Marketing Guide Mentoring Program, shares some takeaways from his organization?s recent video campaign. ~Kivi

When the Executive Director of our organization put forth a challenge to create a campaign that would appeal to students 16-22, as well as a fan/donor base of 35-64 year olds, we were ready for the challenge.? The result was a campaign that gained a good deal of positive feedback, created buzz along with 100,000 YouTube views (and growing), didn?t break the bank and assisted the organization to meet and exceed its business objectives in the fourth quarter.

A little back story:

Youth Education in the Arts (YEA!) is a non-profit musical youth organization that teaches life lessons through music.? From operating a world champion drum corps to programming for underserved youth, YEA! has challenges from recruiting students for its programs to fundraising from an earned income model that survives exclusively on membership fees, ticket and merchandise sales, sponsorship and personal giving.

The Cadets drum and bugle corps, the flagship program of YEA!, was founded in 1934 and has recorded 20 national and world championships, including their latest in 2011.? They were in need of a campaign that would recruit students, compliment holiday fundraisers, assist in holiday merchandise sales and set the stage for the annual campaign coming in the second quarter of 2012.

We created a video campaign to assist in achieving their objectives called ?Always a Cadet.?

Here are 10 tips we suggest from our video project:

1)????? Take a look at augmenting your program by adding video to your marketing team. Technology has decreased in price and increased in accessibility to the point where to tell a story accurately, intimately and imaginatively, an investment in video production pays dividends.

2)????? Do some research to find a full-time videographer, or if budget is scarce, a freelance independent contractor, intern or student could be the ideal answer.?Finding just the right individual was made easier as we brought Alex Giddings on to our team. Alex was a recent photo-journalism graduate with video skills and was knowledgeable of our activity. With his unique view of the project (and the world), we invested in a hi-def camera and a Macintosh video editing suite and away we went.

3)????? YouTube is a weird and wonderful thing. YouTube provides access to all from both the publisher?s and viewer?s point of view without a great deal of cost or angst.? Just watch what your videos are associated with!

4)????? Find inspiration in the media around you.? As for our project, we decided on a mash-up of the iconic ESPN ?This is Sportscenter? commercials and the ongoing NCAA campaign of ?We?re all going pro someday.?

5)????? Use the icon of your brand, no matter how large or small, to help tell your story. The plan was to use our flagship brand, identified by our fans and target audience in their trademark West Point-inspired uniforms, and place members in uniform in real life situations.? ?Always a Cadet? was born.

6)????? Watch the budget and ask for favors. We had a few ideas on a simple whiteboard, two members who were willing to volunteer some of their time in exchange for a lunch or two, some toll and gas money, and a few forgiving mall security guards and shop owners, we went to work.? Note: if ever shooting in Grand Central Station, the NYPD may not have a deep appreciation for your efforts.

7)????? Keep it short, simple, sweet. ?Most studies tell you that you start losing interest from viewers after the one minute mark, and by three minutes your viewership has flat-lined.? We have a note on our whiteboard that says ?60 Second of Awesome.? Each of our ?Always a Cadet? episodes clocked in at :20 seconds, with bumpers.

8)????? Be consistent in your scheduling and messaging. If using a multiple episode campaign, let people know when to expect each episode and give them something to look forward to. From late October through Christmas eve, every weekday afternoon at 2PM we provided a treat to our fans on Facebook that entertained and engaged our supporters.

9)????? You don?t always have to make an ask. No matter how much people try to connect the dots between marketing and results, it is a very difficult task.? Technology has made it easier, but most marketers will agree that if you have agreement on the business objectives, the right combination of audience, media and message will deliver results. We did not incorporate an outright ?ask? or push for a sale or promotion embedded in the content, but rather an open ended opportunity for us to continue to build the overall brand and message.

10)? Think long term and beyond the immediate. Create your campaign with an end result in mind.? While our original intent was to achieve our fourth quarter objectives, long term we were trying to position the brand and get the seeds planted for our annual campaign which kicks-off in the late first quarter.

In the end here were a few of our takeaways:

To our donors and our alumni the takeaway was mission based: The lessons you learn from our organization will remain with you for the rest of your life, and even when you are no longer wearing the uniform, your experience will be with you wherever you go.

To anyone considering participating in our program, we were showing we could make fun of ourselves, creating a point of differentiation with the other groups we compete with for talent and positioned ourselves as trendsetters in our space; in the end, this is a program you want to be part of.

In summary our team learned a great deal, had some fun and hopefully created a few laughs for folks.? As non-profit marketers, we proved the hypothesis that with a little creativity, a few folks willing to take chances, talent from someone with a good eye and video skills, you can make a relatively small commitment that will pay large dividends on a variety of levels ? but you do need to take that first step.

A serial entrepreneur at heart, Sean King has been consulting with small businesses and non-profit organizations for over 20 years.? Currently, Sean is the Director of Marketing & Communications for Youth Education in the Arts (YEA!) a non-profit organization based in Allentown, Pa. which teaches life lessons through music.? He also continues his consulting practice through Aspire Brand Networks.? Sean resides with his wife Natalie and son Haydn in the global crossroads of Fogelsville, Pa. Usher And Diplo Found 'Chemistry' On 'Climax'

In-demand producer/DJ also talks to MTV News about upcoming projects with No Doubt, Snoop Dogg, more.
By Zachary Swickey

<P><b>MADISON, Wisconsin</b> It was just four years ago that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/diplo/artist.jhtml">Diplo</a> put his production prowess on full display with M.I.A.'s mega-hit <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/mia/195024/paper-planes.jhtml">"Paper Planes."</a> Since then, the DJ/producer has become a go-to producer for major acts like Usher, whose latest single, R&B jam "Climax," features work from the Philadelphia native. </P><P> </P><P>On Tuesday, MTV News hit up the first stop on the campus-themed <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/03/28/diplo-chiddy-bang-axe-one-night-only-tour">AXE One Night Only Tour</a> in Wisconsin, and we caught up with the headlining DJ to talk about his upcoming projects. </P><P> </P><P>"We got really luck on that one," he said of the track from Usher's upcoming album. "We just had great chemistry. I was super-nervous working with him the first two days. ... The way we did it, it was just a super-open format. He was down to do whatever we were excited about. </P><P> </P><P>"I love Usher," Diplo gushed. "I'm an Usher fan. I love him for records like 'Confessions Pt. II' and 'Burn,' those are some of the first R&B records from my generation that are still lasting forever. And we did some uptempo stuff too. I don't know what'll make the album, but I think there are definitely three songs that'll make it." </P><P> </P><P>Diplo is currently involved with a number of projects and luckily he was willing to dish. After working last summer with <a href="/news/articles/1670849/no-doubt-album-release.jhtml">No Doubt on their upcoming record</a>, the producer revealed he had good news to share. </P><P> </P><P>"We just finished. I was actually in Jamaica last month and I went in and did some extra stuff on that record," he told us. "I'm super-excited. It's probably going to be a single for their album. They've been [tweeting] about the song, so they're excited about it. I think it's going to be a 'No Doubt featuring Major Lazer' record, because we were producers, and there's another artist on it, too, that we recorded in Jamaica. </P><P> </P><P>"But you'll have to wait," Diplo warned, "I don't know how far off that record is, but every song I've heard is a bona-fide hit. ' </P><P> </P><P>The superstar DJ also recently took to his Facebook page and casually mentioned that he's already started production on 18 tracks for a record with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/snoop_dogg/artist.jhtml">Snoop Dogg</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"Snoop Dogg is an icon, man; he's bigger than the music," Diplo said. "What we're doing is a reggae record. It's like Snoop Dogg and Major Lazer together. It's all reggae and he's singing and he's doing a f---ing awesome job and I never knew it, but he had his heart in every song. ... We're going to get back into the production of it next month, and I'm really proud of that record. It's the first record I've ever executive-produced and his crew is amazing. </P><P></p>

No whining! 5 ways to overcome negativity at work ? Business ...

Tired of an incessantly negative co-worker? Post a ?No Whining? sign for others to see when they enter your work space.

?Negativity is one of those ?most annoying? behaviors,? says Dr. Marie McIntyre, author of Secrets to Winning at Office Politics.

?It?s right up there with slacker co-workers and the use of foul ?language. These people are simply not fun to work with. They sap everyone?s energy and kill productivity.?

A no-whining rule fights against complaining, blaming, avoiding responsibility?or anything that gets in the way of problem-solving.

Overcoming Negativity in the Workplace provides you with useful tips and role-playing scenarios you can call upon when you encounter a less-than-positive attitude at work ? before one employee?s attitude infects an entire department or even a whole company.

If co-workers? bad attitudes create tension, protect yourself from those office toxins.

Take a break when tensions begin to boil over. If conversations drift into nasty gossip, excuse yourself. Strip away the day?s stress before you arrive home by hitting the gym or browsing in a bookstore.

Look at why morale is low, and attack the core problem. Bombard a bad attitude by lobbing kindness in return. If turf wars turned the organization into a battleground, reach out to the other side.

Don?t allow rumors of impending layoffs to sap your productivity. Punch back at the feeling of powerlessness by renewing your commitment to the job you have today. Model the attitude you?d like to see in others.

Overcome negativity at work now!

Don?t be a Pollyanna. Realistically, you can?t banish all negative thoughts from your workplace. But there is a difference between ?good? negativity (that helps find solutions) and ?bad? negativity (griping about everything). Negativity can become self-fulfilling?increasing the chances of failure in a company steeped in negativity. Find the positives and, as much as possible, focus on and build on those.

Follow the Three P?s.

  • Is it personal? When the boss grumbles, it?s probably not about you.
  • Is it permanent? Just remember the old expression, ?This too shall pass.?
  • Does it matter in the big picture? In the midst of office conflict, ask yourself, ??Will anyone even remember this a few years from now??
With this exclusive Guide Booklet, you?ll walk through common scenarios at the office and learn how best to deflect negative behavior. You ? and all the managers in your organization ? will have more control over the positive outcome of dealing with negative attitudes at work. Now it?s available to you at a special low rate ? just $10, including shipping.

Don?t let the low price fool you: This handy booklet is packed with information that could avert a catastrophe or fix a crisis. Order your copy of Overcoming Negativity in the Workplace today!

US Judge rejects Hasbro / ASUS sales ban, Transformer Prime prevails

Image
Coming up with original gadget names is tough work, and, after all, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery -- right? So it was no surprise when ASUS happened upon an alias that more than slightly resembled that of a popular fictional mutant semi -- you know, Transformer Optimus Prime. However shockingly, Hasbro wasn't a fan, opting to battle ASUS to the death in the U.S. court system. And, after countless weeks and many bank holidays, we finally have a victor. It appears that the leader of the Autobots will continue to share its name with the Taiwanese company's tablet -- that's what you get for leaving the fate of the world to mere human bureaucrats. Just don't be surprised when it comes time to name the world's next Superhero, Ms. Zenbook UX31.

Federer beats American Harrison at Key Biscayne

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? On the verge of victory, Roger Federer stopped playing when he thought a pivotal point had ended.

He mistook a fan's shout for a linesman's call, which cost him the game. Play continued for another 25 minutes before Federer finally closed out his opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open by beating 19-year-old American Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-6 (3).

"I'd like to make it a bit more difficult for my opponent," Federer said. "I was just completely confused about the whole situation."

Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick won in more straightforward fashion, but two-time champion Kim Clijsters was eliminated.

Federer led 5-2 in the second set and had a chance to finish in less than an hour until he lost two fluky points that extended the match.

Serving at 5-3, Federer blew an easy overhead to fall behind 15-30. One point later, facing break point for the only time in the match, Federer hit a forehand that landed on the baseline.

A fan hollered "Out!" and Federer stopped. By the time he realized the ball was still in play, Harrison had won the point ? and the game.

"It completely threw me off," Federer said. "It's the first time it has ever happened in my career. I was like, 'That's it? That's a break point? This is how this is going to happen?'"

Harrison took advantage of the break, although he said he felt bad about it.

"Obviously I want to win every point the right way, and not because something happened," the teenager said. "Unfortunately somebody interrupted play."

After Harrison held twice to force the tiebreaker, Federer hit a spectacular lunging lob to turn a scrambling exchange his way for a 4-2 lead. Four points later, he closed out his 40th victory in the past 42 matches.

"I felt like I had to win the match like three times at the end, so I was relieved to come through," he said.

Federer has a 77-match winning streak against players outside the top 20. Harrison is ranked 73rd but on the rise.

"He'll make his move up the rankings," Federer said. "He's a good athlete. I hope he stays healthy so he can show everyone what he's got."

The No. 3-seeded Federer's opponent in the third round will be another American, familiar foil Roddick. They've played 23 times and Roddick has won only twice, although he did beat Federer at Key Biscayne in 2008.

"There's no getting around the fact that he has been the biggest obstacle in my career," Roddick said. "His game matches up well against mine."

Roddick lost only five points on his first serve, never faced a break point and beat Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-2. Roddick is trying to improve a ranking that has dropped to 34th, the lowest he has been since 2001.

The top-seeded Djokovic, who won the tournament in 2007 and 2011, improved to 7-0 against Marco Baghdatis by winning 6-4, 6-4.

Williams started early and finished fast. Walking onto the stadium court at 11 a.m., Williams dominated with her serve, played consistently from the baseline and moved into the fourth round by beating Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-1.

Williams was done shortly after noon.

"I'm not a morning person," she said. "I actually hate morning matches, but I always do my best at 11 o'clock matches."

Williams won most of the short points and a succession of long rallies as well. She hit 25 winners while committing 20 unforced errors.

Seeded 10th, Williams is making her return to tournament tennis after a two-month absence because of a left ankle injury. At No. 20, Vinci is the highest-ranked player Williams has beaten this year.

Williams is seeking her first tournament championship since August, and she's bidding for a record sixth title at Key Biscayne.

"I need trophies," she said. "I want to add more and to do more. There are records to break. So I'll do it. I've just got to believe it. I do believe it."

Sharapova, seeded second, beat American qualifier Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-2. Clijsters, coming back from an ankle injury, lost to No. 23 Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki beat No. 29-seeded Petra Cetkovska 6-3, 7-5. Reigning French Open champion Li Na defeated Iveta Benesova 7-5, 6-2, and Samantha Stosur, last year's U.S. Open winner, rallied past Chanelle Scheepers, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

No. 8 Mardy Fish was among 15 seeded men to advance. One lost: No. 15 Feliciano Lopez was beaten by fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Mysterious cloud spotted on Mars

Wayne Jaeschke

Amateur astrophotographer Wayne Jaeschke captured this image of a "terminator projection" rising up from the edge of the Martian disk at about the 1 o'clock position on March 22. The inset photo is a 200 percent enlargement of the region around the projection. For more, check out Exosky.net, Jaeschke's website.

By Alan Boyle

Amateur astronomers are puzzling over a seemingly anomalous cloud that has shown up on images of Mars taken over the past few days. Is it really a cloud, or a trick of the eye? Does it really extend 150 miles up from the surface, as some of the observers suggest? And what churned up all that stuff, anyway? The amateurs and the pros will be trying to resolve those questions before the phenomenon fades away.

"It's not completely unexpected," Jonathon Hill, a member of the team at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, told me today. "But it's bigger than we would expect, and it's definitely something that our atmosphere guys want to take a look at."

Hill and his colleagues will be looking at the area where the cloud was spotted using the Thermal Emission Imaging System, or THEMIS, which is one of the instruments on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter.

"In the command upload we're preparing to send today, we've included observations that will hopefully capture some of these recent clouds," Hill wrote in an email. "Our THEMIS camera on Mars Odyssey is capable of acquiring simultaneous visible and thermal infrared images, so our atmospheric researchers are pretty excited about the possibility of not only getting a good look at the cloud structures, but also their temperatures."

THEMIS will be checking out heightened cloud activity around Mars' shield volcanoes as well as around the southern site spotted by the amateurs. Pictures from a camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, called the Mars Color Imager, or MARCI, might provide further clues about the southern cloud feature. And amateur astronomers are sending out the alert for observers to keep a close watch on the Red Planet over the coming days.

There's been lots of buzz about the high-altitude cloud on Cloudy Nights and other online discussion forums for skywatchers. Sky & Telescope's Sean Walker says the puff of white was first noticed on March 20 by Wayne Jaeschke, an amateur astrophotographer from Pennsylvania. Since then, other observers have identified the feature in images going back as far as March 12.

All sorts of hypotheses have been proposed: Could it be debris kicked up by a meteoric impact? Is it a huge weather system? Is it merely a funny kind of glint caused by a combination of lighting and atmospheric conditions?

In an email, Jaeschke told me that the feature is "still there, although it has decreased in size over the past two days."

"This has led some to believe that it was some sort of transient-type event," Jaeschke said. So it's crucial to make as many observations of the area as possible over the next few days.

Wayne Jaeschke created this animated GIF image of Mars with the cloud coming into view on the upper right edge of the planet's disk. For more from Jaeschke, check out his Exosky website.

Walker says the feature is currently well-placed for viewing from the Americas. He says it should show up on the edge of Mars' disk around 1:10 a.m. ET Saturday, and 39.5 minutes later on each succeeding night. Consult the photos above for guidance on where to point a medium-size telescope ? keeping in mind that these images are inverted to appear as they would through a telescope, with south pointing "up." Arizona State University's Hill says the area in question is called Terra Cimmeria.

Observation reports should be sent via email to Richard McKim, director of the British Astronomical Association's Mars Section. (The linked website includes McKim's email address, as well as a picture of the chap.)

Solving this mystery ? if it indeed turns out to be an honest-to-goodness mystery rather than a mere quirk?? may require additional data from the big guns of the astronomy world. But in any case, the episode illustrates once again how much amateurs can contribute to uncovering the wonders of the cosmos.

"When it comes to Mars, amateurs and professionals working together give you way more insight into ongoing processes, because with so many amateurs, you're continuously monitoring changes in the planet," Hill told me. "They provide a perspective and a context that we don't usually get."

Forget Today?s Drama, Dustin Curtis? Svbtle Is About Pushing Blogging Forward

Screen Shot 2012-03-24 at 2.56.47 AMWidely read designer Dustin Curtis has come up with a new blogging platform called Svbtle, that's meant to help you take blog posts from ideas to well-presented articles. At first, it looks like a better Tumblr, based on the work he showed off on Thursday. And in fact it looks so good that a couple developers forked it within hours, and offered new versions for the world to install. Which, in turn, sparked a big debate about the rights that creatives have over their work... I'm going to skip over all that because it's not a new topic, and it misses the point.

Should Fergie Judge The X Factor?

The X Factor carousel has stopped spinning on Fergie. At this exact moment, at least.

This member of The Black Eyed Peas is reportedly the latest big name under consideration by Simon Cowell and company, as sources tell Life & Style "there have been some conversations" between the singer and producers, but: "It's in the early stages."

Picture of Fergie

Other possibilities for the judging panel - which we know will include Cowell and L.A. Reid - reportedly include Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Britney Spears.

George Clooney's girlfriend, Stacey Keibler, is supposedly a candidate for one of the two hosting gigs available.

If nothing else, the massive layoffs of Steve Jones, Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul have certainly kept The X Factor in the news.

UN's Ban to raise N. Korea launch at Seoul summit

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday he would raise North Korea's planned rocket launch at a Seoul nuclear summit next week, expressing "deep concern" over the issue.

"I am going to discuss the issue with the president of the Republic of (South Korea) in Seoul and I will also engage with other leaders attending the nuclear summit," Ban told a press conference in Malaysia.

The nuclear-armed North has announced it will launch a rocket next month to put a satellite into orbit, a move which the US and its allies see as a pretext for a long-range missile test.

Pyongyang has said any South Korean attempt to address the North's nuclear programme at the March 26-27 Seoul summit would be seen as a declaration of war.

But the programme and the rocket launch were expected to be hot topics on the sidelines of the meeting, which will see US President Barack Obama and other world leaders meet to discuss nuclear security issues.

A UN Security Council resolution passed after the North staged missile and nuclear tests in 2009 bans a ballistic missile launch for any purpose.

"As secretary-general of the United Nations I express my deep concern by the announcement of the (North Korean) government (on) their intention to launch a satellite," Ban said.

Ban, a South Korean, also called the planned launch "a clear violation" of Security Council resolutions and said it "threatens the peace and security on the Korean peninsula".

He said it could also undermine recent positive signs on long-running international efforts to end North Korea's nuclear programme.

Under a deal announced last month but now in jeopardy, Washington would offer substantial food aid for a partial nuclear freeze. It has raised modest hopes of progress in the denuclearisation efforts.

"This (the rocket launch) is again undermining the positive atmosphere which has been established recently between the US and (North Korea)," Ban said.

The North has lambasted next week's meeting -- the South's biggest-ever diplomatic gathering -- as an "unsavoury burlesque" intended to justify an atomic attack by South Korea and its US ally.

In Seoul, South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan again appealed to the North to scrap its rocket launch, calling it "a grave provocation".

South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak reportedly said Wednesday that despite Pyongyang's threats, leaders of five nations will discuss ways to press North Korea to abandon its plans to launch the rocket.

The United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia have been involved since 2003 in the talks, which have been broken off repeatedly over various instances of North Korean brinksmanship.

North Korea's state news agency said Wednesday any attempt by Lee to raise the issue would be "a ridiculous attempt and an absolutely unpardonable criminal act".

"Any provocative act would be considered as a declaration of war against us and its consequences would serve as great obstacles to talks on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula," it said.
