35 million men are currently experiencing hair loss according to Relevant Research, inc. and 65% of men have noticeable hair loss by age 60.
The two main drugs used to fight male pattern baldness and regain hair growth are Finasteride (Propecia) and Minoxidil (Rogaine).
Everyone has a friend who has tried one of these two drugs. Some see results, some do not. There are side effects that you should be aware of. Rogaine has some that aren't too bad, but Propecia has some serious side effects that can actually persist after discontinuation.
Rogaine Side Effects
The main side effect is irritation of the skin like itching, redness and dryness of the scalp. This can result in flaking and contact dermatitis. This is due to the alcohol and propylene glycol present in the product.
Other side effects are Irritation of the eyes and unwanted hair growth on other parts of the body. According to the FDA, some severe allergic reactions include rashes, swelling, chest pain, dizziness, fast heart rate and high blood pressure. Also included in this list are swelling of the face or hands and feet. On top of that, unexpected weight gain can occur.
Rogaine has been known to initially cause hair loss.
Many men use medicine to combat hair loss and baldness. It is very important to your health to understand the unwelcome side effects before you decide to fight hair loss medically. Many men have been permanently damaged so you should be informed before acting.

This is explained as the scalp shedding weak follicles to make way for thicker, stronger hair.
Ok, not too bad, especially if it works. Most side effects are on the outside of the body and the people who take the drug know what they are getting themselves into. Propecia side effects are on the inside of the body, and much more detrimental.
Propecia Side Effects
Medical studies have shown that Propecia causes impotence, erectile dysfunction (ED), loss of libido, problems with ejaculation, decreased semen output and quality, genital shrinkage, orgasm disorders, and prostate problems. The list goes on and on along in the theme of sexual disorders and it reaches into proof that the drug may cause a form of high grade prostate cancer. This is because Propecia actually interferes in the hormone production in the body. An in depth explanation of how the drug works and how the body chemistry is detrimentally effected by Finasteride is explained here.
There are mental side effects when using Propecia as well. There is an increased likelihood of men who use this drug to have experience severe depression, and anxiety. Men have had problems with cognitive processing and memory loss.
What is chilling is the fact that Merck, the drug manufacturer of Propecia did not label all these side effects and did not state that the side effects have a chance of being permanent even after stopping use. In 2012, the FDA made Merck relabel Propecia and add "libido disorders, ejaculation disorders, and orgasm disorders that continued after discontinuation of the drug," as well as incidents of male infertility and poor semen quality.
There are lawsuits against Merck in all 50 states now. Hundreds of men are now seeking justice and have filed a Propecia lawsuit because of these harmful and debilitating side effects. Most every man says that they never would have taken the drug if they knew what was in store for them. If you or someone you know is taking the drug, you should tell them about the possibilities of severe permanent sexual side effects.
