Many people don't regularly carry cash anymore, but as Hurricane Sandy just proved it can be essential when the power is out, no stores are accepting credit or debit cards, and no electricity means no functioning ATMs.
Consumer Reports magazine's weblog recommends keeping a small stash of cash in your home that is always there in case of emergency. Depending on how much you want to keep on hand you may consider investing in a safe, using a keychain cash can, a DIY book safe, or just keeping a folded dollar bill in your phone case. I'd recommend keeping at least enough for a tank of gas and a few meals. If you know that a hurricane or winter storms are headed your way and don't normally keep cash consider taking out enough from an ATM to get you by for a few days in case of a power loss.
