I would need two hands to count the number of people that I alone have known with an eating disorder; so I wanted to understand why it seems to have become so common for women, men and adolescence to battle with their health over body image.

Figures released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre show that more than 2,200 admissions for eating disorders were recorded in the year up to June 2012 and over 1.6 million people in the UK are directly affected by an eating disorder.

We have a history of eating disorders in the West, dating back to the 12th century when food was denied as a part of self-spiritual discovery. Today, it seems that social media, such as pro-anorexia websites and ?thinspiration? accounts, has created a community for people with this illness to encourage each other or to become obsessed with challenging themselves against other people?s eating disorders.

Psychology studies have shown that a sudden change in family dynamics, a loss, societal pressures, anxiety and stress are all major denominators in the cause of developing an eating disorder. The four diagnoses? of eating disorders are Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder and EDNOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified).

Anorexia is the most common illness that comes through admissions in the UK, and can be easily recognised with visual signs of dramatic weight loss, behavioural change towards food, excessive exercising and very low energy.? Psychologically, victims of anorexia will begin to push people away to avoid being questioned about their eating habits, or lack of. The effect this starvation has on the body is a severe threat to the person?s health and puts their life in great danger.

Binge Eating Disorder is also detected in the drastic change of the person?s appearance through weight gain due to excessive eating of bad foods. People with this disorder will eat in secret and often eat several meals in one sitting, lack of control is followed my paranoia of weight gain, but this person will not purge after eating.

Bulimia is defined as a person binge eating then purging or throwing up. This form of eating disorder goes on behind closed doors and is harder to detect in appearance. A person suffering with bulimia may seem to have regular eating habits, but once alone will binge eat and then vomit and/or take laxatives to control their weight. A person suffering from bulimia psychologically suffers from feeling out of control, stressed and depressed. Bulimia is a vicious circle - binge eating, purging, followed by starving the body because the person feels guilt, and then binging again because the body craves nourishment. Severe damage is caused to the stomach, throat, teeth and digestion system.

EDNOS is connected to anyone who has a mix or some of the symptoms that are presented in the other eating disorders. Some people may not realize they?re suffering with EDNOS until reading symptoms of the other disorders.

The statistics show young people, mostly female, aged between 15-25 are most at risk of developing an eating disorder. To support this, I asked 20 fellow peers if they had any experience with eating disorders; 14 of these honestly discussed that they had either been directly affected by an ED or have been aware that a friend or family member has. Only a couple of the cases discussed received medical advice or support, the rest undiagnosed, which may dangerously go on for years unknown.

This particular age group, dominated by females, is more influenced and affected by social pressures and the desire to look a certain way. The fashion industry has portrayed this look as thin, yet we know these cover girls are commonly unhealthy and battling with an ED themselves; adding further pressure to achieve this ?look?. It?s fantastic that high street companies, such as H&M, are now using curvier healthy models, which they call ?real girls?, to advertise their clothes.

I have noticed a social boom in health and fitness, with fitness experts promoting and educating how to correctly maintain a healthy weight with a moderate amount of exercise and the correct nutrients and calories the body needs. If this could reach people in their early teens via social networks or the education system, could it slowly but surly decrease the cases of eating disorders and increase the health and confidence of our future generations? I think and sincerely hope so.

Hungry for income? Choice narrows but equities to keep an edge

LONDON (Reuters) - The unusual premium European equity dividends offer investors over quality corporate bond yields may have peaked as debt markets turn volatile and pressure grows on firms to use their cash.

Any gradual recovery in the economic outlook in coming months, as stimulus efforts by major central banks take hold, is likely to narrow the difference, but the gap will still favor stocks, analysts said.

Companies in the STOXX Europe 600 index carry an average dividend yield of around 2.95 percent compared with a 2.2 percent yield for high-quality corporate bonds tracked by the iBOXX European corporate bond index.

The spread between the two flipped in favor of dividends in mid-2012 for the first time, driven by sharply falling bond yields, and by mid-May 2013 hit 89 basis points where it has since steadied, but the second half of 2013 could be different.

"I believe the spread will tighten in the coming months and I really recommend investors switch into equities," said Roland Kaloyan, global asset allocation strategist at Societe Generale.

Two main factors could drive the spread narrowing.

First, corporate bond yields could rise if safer government debt yields lift from abnormal lows, especially if the U.S. Federal Reserve begins winding up its asset buying. High levels of liquidity are seen likely to prevent any sharp selloff.

Second, Kaloyan said, rising share buybacks and an upsurge in merger and acquisition activity as the recovery gathers strength will make equities more attractive, raising prices and thus reducing the dividend yield.

Kaloyan has calculated that the excess return offered to investors for switching to euro equities from investment grade credit is close to an all-time high and likely to move higher. This trend is already apparent in U.S. stocks, where the so-called "equity risk premium" is at a record high.

"The trend out of credit (corporate bonds) and into equities has already started and should gain momentum in the coming quarters," he said.

European equity dividend yields offering a premium over high-grade corporate debt was unheard of until investors' hunt for return and central bank stimulus began driving bond yields down.

In Europe the premium in favor of dividends first appeared in mid-2012, just before European Central Bank President Mario Draghi drew a line under the euro zone crisis with his "whatever it takes" promise to save the region's single currency.

RISKS ABATE

Draghi's pledge, and his earlier policies to stabilize the region's fragile banking system, have helped European stocks slowly recover and reduced volatility across the markets.

This fall in volatility is another factor which could drive income investors back into equities and away from credit, by narrowing the gap between the risk-adjusted returns available on both asset classes.

"Volatility across assets in Europe is now below the level we saw through the crisis and back to the 2007 range," John Bilton, European investment strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch said.

"This means that while equities can be expected to rise, we are beginning to reach the limit on how far credit can go. I think that is what will cause the spread between the dividend yield and bond yields to come back off the highs," he said.

Bilton said abundant central bank liquidity in the system and a relative lack of supply of good European corporate debt were likely to limit any large move back up in bond yields.

But he added that with the fall in equity market volatility, which increases the prospect of a rise in demand, the outlook was shifting dramatically in favor of stocks.

By measuring risk-adjusted performance, which involves subtracting returns on the safest government bonds from those on equities and dividing by the volatility in a calculation known as the Sharpe ratio, and comparing it with a similar calculation for corporate credit, the change was very clear.

"The Sharpe ratio has swung in favor of stocks: for each unit of risk you can now get more return out of equities than you can out credit for the first time in five years," he said.

Damaging storms move through East, South

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Damaging winds flattened trees and utility wires and knocked out power in parts of northern New England on Sunday, flights were delayed in New York City and a tornado touched down in South Carolina as the East Coast weathered the remnants of violent storms that claimed 13 lives in Oklahoma.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds and hail moved through sections of the Northeast on Sunday afternoon, leaving 30,000 in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine still without power late that night. The National Weather Service issued a rare tornado warning as a line of thunderstorms raced through New Hampshire into western Maine. The weather service said a tornado warning was issued as radar indicated a possible tornado moving from Kingfield, Maine, to Bingham, Maine. The tornado was not immediately confirmed.

In northwestern South Carolina, a tornado knocked a home off its foundation and blew part of the roof off, said Taylor Jones, director of emergency management for Anderson County. Some trees were blown down and there was heavy rain, but no widespread damage. No injuries were reported.

"It was an isolated incident," Jones said.

The weather service said thunderstorms and winds in excess of 60 mph in Vermont produced 1-inch-diameter hail and knocked down numerous trees and wires. In northern Maine, radar picked up a line of thunderstorms capable of producing quarter-sized hail and winds stronger than 70 mph. Forecasters warned of tornadoes.

The prediction for stormy weather in the New York City region delayed the start of the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees game by 45 minutes and produced backups at major airports. But by just before 10 p.m., the delays that had been up to three hours had eased to 15 minutes or less at John F. Kennedy International, La Guardia Airport and Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey. In Boston, there were delays up to 45 minutes, and outside Washington, delays were up to nearly two hours at Dulles Airport.

Patrick Herb, 34, was traveling from Dulles with his 1- and 3-year-old to his home in Wisconsin, and had his departure time for a connecting flight in Detroit moved back three times. He described the mood at Dulles as "frustration and fatigue."

"The communication is honestly one of the most frustrating parts of travel," Herb said. "I'm sort of pessimistic it will get off on time."

In other parts of the South, thunderstorms, high winds and hail rolled through as part of a slow-moving cold front. Heavy rains could spawn flash flooding in some areas, the weather service said.

Meanwhile, residents in Oklahoma cleaned up after the storms there killed 13 people, including three veteran storm chasers. Tim Samaras; his son, Paul Samaras; and Carl Young were killed Friday. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said the men were involved in tornado research.

Jim Samaras told The Associated Press on Sunday that his brother Tim was motivated by science.

"He looked at tornadoes not for the spotlight of TV but for the scientific aspect," Jim Samaras said. "At the end of the day, he wanted to save lives and he gave the ultimate sacrifice for that."

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin toured damage in El Reno, about 30 miles from Oklahoma City. She said the death toll could rise as emergency workers continue searching flooded areas for missing residents.

The state Medical Examiner's Office spokeswoman Amy Elliott said the death toll had risen to 13 from Friday's EF3 tornado, which charged down a clogged Interstate 40 in the western suburbs. Among the dead were two children ? an infant sucked out of the car with its mother and a 4-year-old boy who along with his family had sought shelter in a drainage ditch.

In Missouri, areas west of St. Louis received significant damage from an EF3 tornado Friday that packed estimated winds of 150 mph. In St. Charles County, at least 71 homes were heavily damaged and 100 had slight to moderate damage, county spokeswoman Colene McEntee said.

Northeast of St. Louis, the town of Roxana, Ill., also saw damage from an EF3 tornado. Weather service meteorologist Jayson Gosselin said it wasn't clear whether the damage in Missouri and Illinois came from the same twister or separate ones.

Five tornadoes struck the Oklahoma City metro area on Friday, the weather service said. Fallin said Sunday that 115 people were injured.

The storms formed out on the prairie west of Oklahoma City, giving residents plenty of advance notice. When told to seek shelter, many ventured out and snarled traffic across the metro area ? perhaps remembering when a tornado hit Moore on May 20 and killed 24 people.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph said roadways quickly became congested with the convergence of rush-hour traffic and fleeing residents.

"They had no place to go, and that's always a bad thing. They were essentially targets just waiting for a tornado to touch down," Randolph said. "I'm not sure why people do that sort of stuff, but it is very dangerous."

Wrongful death lawsuit filed in KC explosion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? The parents of a woman killed in an explosion and fire at a Kansas City restaurant have filed a lawsuit against several companies.

Megan Cramer, 46, died Feb. 19 in a gas explosion that destroyed JJ's restaurant and injured several other people. A drilling project was underway outside the restaurant, where Cramer was a hostess, when a gas line was severed.

Cramer's body was recovered the day after the explosion.

Cramer's family filed the wrongful death lawsuit Friday in Jackson County against Missouri Gas Energy, Time Warner Cable Midwest, USIC Locating Services Inc., Southern Union Co., Heartland Midwest LLC and an employee of Heartland, The Kansas City Star reported (http://bit.ly/15qfijz ). Other lawsuits have also been filed since the explosion.

"We love and loved Megan," Cramer's mother, Genny Cramer, 73, of Springfield, told The Star on Saturday. "We miss her dreadfully and hope that all of this will result in better regulations, and following those regulations, so there are no future Megans to be lost."

Vicki Anderson Granado, spokeswoman for MGE and Southern Union Co., said those companies do not comment on pending litigation. Time Warner Cable spokesman Mike Pedelty also declined comment, telling The Associated Press it was because the matter is "still in the fact-finding stage."

Messages that the AP left with representatives of the other companies named in the lawsuit were not immediately returned Sunday.

Hagel warns China on cyberattacks

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel delivered a two-pronged message to Beijing ? holding out hope for a slowly improving military relationship with the Asian giant while issuing a stern warning on cyberattacks coming from that country. But he was met with immediate skepticism from the Chinese delegation in the audience, who questioned America's role in the Pacific.

Speaking Saturday at a security conference in Singapore that he helped to form more than a decade ago, Hagel said: "The United States has expressed our concerns about the growing threat of cyber intrusions, some of which appear to be tied to the Chinese government and military." While he is not the first U.S. official to publicly blame China for computer-based attacks that steal data from U.S. government and corporate networks, he delivered the rebuke in China's backyard, with members of Beijing's government in the audience.

His comments triggered a wry response from Maj. Gen. Yao Yunzhu, director of the Center for China-America Defense Relations, at the People's Liberation Army's Academy of Military Science, who challenged him to better explain America's intentions in its building up of the military across the region.

"Thank you for mentioning China several times," she told Hagel, minutes after he concluded his remarks, and began taking questions from the audience. As an audible murmur and some quiet chuckles rose from the audience, she added that America's new shift to the Pacific has been widely interpreted as an "attempt to counter China's rising influence, and to offset the increasing military capabilities of the Chinese PLA. However, China is not convinced."

She asked Hagel how he can assure China that the increased military deployments to the region are part of an effort to build a more positive relationship with Beijing.

"That's really the whole point behind closer military-to-military relationships," Hagel responded. "We don't want miscalculations and misunderstandings and misinterpretations. And the only way you do that is you talk to each other."

He said the U.S. welcomes a strong and emerging China that takes on responsibilities for security in the region, and that Beijing and Washington have to be inclusive and direct with each other. "I think we've made continued progress," he said. "And we'll make more progress."

In his speech, Hagel said the U.S. is determined to work closely with China and other nations to establish appropriate standards for behavior in cyberspace. And the U.S. will also be looking to China for help in resolving ongoing problems with North Korea, which in recent months has ratcheted up tensions in the region with a series of rocket launches, an underground nuclear test and threats of nuclear strikes against the U.S. and its allies.

Noting America's longstanding tensions with China, Hagel said: "The key is for these differences to be addressed on the basis of a continuous and respectful dialogue." The two nations, he said, must build trust in order to avoid military miscalculations.

Much of the speech, however, was designed as a follow-up to last year's gathering, when then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta first detailed what has been called the military's new pivot to the Pacific. Hagel assured Asian nations that despite sharp budget cuts, the Pentagon will continue to shift its military troops, ships and aircraft to the Pacific region.

Where Panetta had laid out promises, Hagel was able to point to results. Marines have been deployed to the northern city of Darwin in Australia, a combat ship has arrived in Singapore and plans are unfolding for Army units that will rotate in and out of the region.

Hagel also suggested that the Pentagon's five-year budget plan continues to plan for additional F-22 Raptor fighter jets and F-35 Joint Strike Fighters in the region, along with a fourth fast-attack submarine deployed to Guam.

He provided a glimpse into the broad review he ordered to determine whether budget cuts will force the U.S. military strategy to change ? a year after Panetta unveiled it.

International leaders have been watching the deliberations in Washington closely to see what the roughly $487 billion in automatic spending cuts over the next 10 years will mean to America's commitment's abroad. Already the military services have curtailed flight and combat training for many units, grounded some Air Force squadrons and delayed or canceled some ship deployments.

The Pentagon has also announced it will furlough about 680,000 civilian employees for up to 11 days through the end of the fiscal year.

The initial report on the strategy review was due to Hagel on Friday, and while he said the outcome is not final, it should reflect the rise of Asia.

"For the region, this means I can assure you that coming out of this review, the United States will continue to implement the rebalance and prioritize our posture, activities and investments in Asia-Pacific," he said.

The Asia-Pacific, said Hagel, is at the epicenter of historic changes around the world and the U.S. is committed to strengthening its military, economic and diplomatic partnerships with nations across the region. As part of that he noted that the U.S. will set aside $100 million to expand its military exercises in the region.

Just finishing his third month as Pentagon Chief, Hagel used the speech to introduce himself on a more personal level to the audience. For many he is a familiar face, since he was one of the founders of the conference in 2002, and as a U.S. senator, was a speaker at the first three gatherings.

He talked about his long ties to the region, including his father's service in World War II flying B-25 bombers in the South Pacific, and his own service in Vietnam with his brother. Hagel was wounded and twice received the Purple Heart.

Later, he traveled to Asia as the co-founder of a cellular telephone company and then, as a GOP senator from Nebraska, he served on the Foreign Relations Committee.

"What I took away from all these experiences," Hagel said, "was a firm belief that the arc of the 21st century would be shaped by events here in Asia."

Exercising Old-School - Health, Fitness, and Sports - Wrong Planet

About two weeks ago, I went for an annual physical. I had ballooned in the last year. For six years, I had held steady at just under 300lb, but when I went in I weighed in at 360lb. Needless to say, this was a bit of a shock. Yet, in the last two weeks, I dropped 20lb. I'm rather proud of myself. It's the first time I've actively lost weight in over half a decade.

I approached this in a two-pronged attack. The first was through food. Rather than stuffing my face with whatever could be microwaved quickly, I cooked. And I cooked so that I would have few leftovers. I've learned I'm pretty good at cooking, and have noticed that if eaten slowly, and without the temptation of a second serving, I can be just as satisfied with a small bowl of goulash as I might with a big one or three.

The second was through exercise, and that's the point of this thread. Now, my sister, she's a gym rat, and her boyfriend is a powerlifter, and both of them have been trying to drag me to the gym. The problem is, I don't like gyms. If I exercise, I prefer it to be out of doors. There's something about gyms that has always put me off, I just don't know what it is.

So what I did instead, keeping with my special interest du jour, the 19th Century British Empire, was to devour everything I could find on the exercises of that time. In case you didn't know, physical fitness was almost a religion in those days (It wouldn't do to send flabby little nerds off to subjugate deepest Africa). Rudyard Kipling, for example, one of my great heroes, was a four and a half minute mile, supposedly. So, says I, what can I learn here?

When my sister goes to the gym, she'll spend two hours of exercise there, and the rest of the day, she sits. This didn't seem pretty productive to me, and a lot of the sources that I've studied actually proposed instead to do a little bit a lot; A set of 60 jumping jacks or 25 squats every hour, for example. It seemed stamina training and walking had a greater emphasis than anything else, but strength training was definitely supported. A young man was recommended to do curls or pushups getting out of bed, and to run a mile every evening before bed. In between, there were exercises scattered throughout the day.

Now, this philosophy of physical fitness all the time seems far more positive to me than "a half hour of continuous exercise three times a week" as my doctor suggested. This is the kind of training that puts us at peak physical fitness, and it was spread throughout the western world, not just in Britain. What happened? Why have the expectations placed on a man (or woman) been reduced so drastically, and despite the obesity epidemic, nobody seems to be proposing a return to such a regimen?

Ah, well, it works for me.
