Penny Marshall advises budding directors: Drop the ambition
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pioneering film director and producer Penny Marshall has some advice for future filmmakers: Take some chances and don't be a slave to Hollywood ambition.
The 69-year-old Marshall who rose to fame as a comedic actress in the sitcom "Laverne and Shirley," and ultimately broke barriers for female directors in a male-dominated field with a string of hit Hollywood films, chronicles her colorful life in a new memoir, "My Mother Was Nuts" that hit U.S. stores this week.
The book is filled Marshall's anecdotes about her childhood in the Bronx with her dance instructor mother, her shotgun marriage in 1961, drug-fueled times with a circle of famous names, her bout with cancer and an acting and directing career spanning 44 years.
She said her lack of fear of being thrown out of Hollywood helped her succeed as the first female director to make a film that grossed over $100 million with 1988's family comedy "Big" starring Tom Hanks.
"I'll try anything. What are they gonna do, kick me out of show business?" she told Reuters in an interview. "I didn't have that problem because I wasn't ambitious enough."
Another key success ingredient? Don't be afraid to ask for help.
"I talked to my crew and said, ?Just tell me the truth.' I turned to the crews and asked them for their help," she said.
The gambit worked: "Big" was both a box office and critical success and her second film, "Awakenings," picked up an Oscar nomination for best film, while her third, the baseball comedy drama "A League of Their Own," became a Marshall fan favorite.

But after helping pave the way for female directors to helm critical and box office hits, these days Marshall said she doesn't have an opinion on the lack of female directors that still haunts Hollywood. She said her situation was unique since "they asked me - I didn't knock on their door."
She did encourage aspiring filmmakers to use current filmmaking tools that were not available to her, including advances in technology and social media.
"Look at YouTube, how many talented people there are," she said. "It's a whole new world of how to express yourself. I don't know how to work that world, but take advantage of it."
Throughout her life, her propensity for trying new things extended beyond the professional realm: she writes candidly about her drug use during the 1970s and 80s, which included cocaine, marijuana, qualudes, and ecstasy.
Contrast that to now, she said, where vitamins, thyroid medication, and the occasional Motrin are her legal drugs of choice. But she does support legalizing marijuana, especially for medical use.
"I have nothing against anyone who smokes it, I like the smell of it, if it helps with people's illness, I say yes," she said.
She is also vocal about her support for abortion rights after her own experience with unplanned pregnancies. Her first pregnancy with her boyfriend-turned-husband resulted in her daughter, Tracy. Her second, following her second marriage and divorce to Hollywood director Rob Reiner, resulted in an abortion.
"I'm pro-choice. But I'm glad that there was no choice back then, because I have a wonderful daughter and three grandchildren," she said.
These days, after beating a brain-tumor scare, she is passionate about activism on behalf of war veterans with brain injuries. She also directs the occasional television episode.
She has not directed a Hollywood film in years -- her last movie in cinemas was 2001's "Riding in Cars with Boys." But she would not rule out getting behind the camera for a big movie again.
"We'll see," she said, smiling.

The end of the political conventions marks the true beginning of the presidential campaign. Detailed policy positions will emerge over the coming weeks, but major themes are defined during the conventions. The GOP convention did not turn Romney-Democrats away from their support of Mitt Romney. But they realized that the Charlotte convention could persuade them to return to the Democratic fold. As the website reveals it did not happen. In the eyes of Romney-Democrats the opening night seemed to confirm the liberal Democratic model ? the solution for every problem is a government program. This model supports the GOP campaign strategy: identify special interest groups and offer them government aid, even better if you can personalize it to create an emotional rather than a reasoned response.

And then to have the president claim, in affect, that ?I have a plan to create a million jobs, but the Republicans won?t let me do it.? The Democratic convention was combination of pandering and whining. Romney-Democrats close with the observation that ?This man may be our president, but he is not our leader. And if he can?t lead domestically it?s no surprise that he can?t lead globally.?
Right now the Romney-Democrats are looking at deeds, not words; at performance, not promises. The debates may change their minds, but based on what they have seen so far they will vote for Mitt Romney in November.

In what may be the most compulsory internship experience you?ve ever heard of, the Shanghai Daily is reporting that thousands of Chinese students from schools neighboring a Foxconn factory in the city of Huai'an were forced to help fulfill iPhone 5 orders.According to the paper, students were taken by bus to the plant, and started working on the production line last Thursday after the Taiwanese-owned company was badly in need of extra hands to keep up with assembly of the hotly anticipated new version of Apple?s iPhone line.
Teachers from nearby schools confirmed via a radio report that classes had been interrupted, as these internships would fulfill their pupils' need to "experience working conditions." The student workers received the equivalent of $243.97 per month as compensation for working six days a week, and clocking in 12 hours per day.

According to a China National Radio report, teachers from local schools admitted suspending routine classes over the next one or two months. They said the internships were a compulsory course for students to "experience working conditions and promote individual ability," the report said.
A Jiangsu Institute of Finance and Economy student called Youyoyu said students from departments of law, English and management were all working at the plant.
I was shocked when I read this (although I suppose I should not be), I was wondering what ATS thinks about the compulsory internship. I suppose they can get back to their studies when the current production run is finished.

88% Easy Money
In "Easy Money," JW(Joel Kinnaman) is studying economics at university while driving a cab. One night at a party, he takes a liking to Sophie(Lisa Henni) but is told by his rich friends that she is so very much out of his league. In any case, it is probably a good thing that they do not know about his writing term papers for his fellow students, along with working for Abdulkarim(Mahmut Suvakci), a local crime boss. One such job for him involves tailing Jorge(Matias Varela) who recently escaped from jail, which brings him to the attention of Radovan(Dejan Cukic), Abdulkarim's rival. JW even goes above the call of duty, by rescuing Jorge from a savage beating from Mrado(Dragomir Mrsic). I always admire a film with ambition like "Easy Money" to tell a multi-faceted story from as many different angles as possible to show the emotional cost of crime. While many of the surface details may seem familiar, the difference here is this being Sweden which may appear to outsiders to be as close to a classless society as possible in this world. But dig deeper and that's not the case at all with JW, from a small town in the north, being as much an outsider as the immigrants. However exaggerated it might be, there is a clear physical delineation between the fair haired Swedish characters and the darker complexioned Spanish, Serbian and Arab characters. That's not the only troubling aspect of the movie as it could have been much more tightly edited with an ending that seems sudden, even with a handy dandy epilogue. And it crosses into sentimental territory too often, especially with the Mrado and Lovisa(Lea Stojanov) Show which occasionally feels like it could have come from an entirely different movie.
